Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Provide support to commercial Relationship Managers (RM) through underwriting, policy knowledge, credit structuring and risk assessment in credit request packages to be submitted for pre-screening discussions, co-approval, or credits approved within the RM’s lending authority. Ensure packages are complete, accurate and thoroughly documented.
2. Develop credit underwriting effectiveness and continuous improvements of assigned commercial lending staff through credit leadership, including coaching and counseling, feedback and reinforcement, and support of the Bank’s sales and credit cultures.
3. Responsibilities will include formally reviewing and documenting the quality of the decisions as part of an established credit quality assurance program. Team Leaders will be responsible for sampling the work performed by the individuals they manage to ensure accuracy of information and compliance with policies and processes.
4. Evaluate and make recommendations for assigned personnel regarding employment, training (initial and ongoing), performance rating, salary changes, promotions, transfers, terminations, career enhancement and staffing.
5. Delegate work, set schedules, level load, and advise underwriters in the more complex phases of their work.
6. Provide leadership to reinforce and strengthen the BB&T Values Driven Credit Culture. Interpret and ensure communications of the Bank’s policies, programs, and objectives.
7. Facilitate timely receipt of current and adequate financial statements of all types, tax returns, and personal financial statements. Analyze financial statements and document client performance along with identified risk and risk mitigants.
8. Understand and can articulate all BB&T Commercial Credit policies, procedures and processes. Recommend credit within the Bank’s risk appetite including documenting when and why to make exceptions. Also recommend ongoing servicing including covenants. May require specialized underwriting skills for Commercial & Industrial, Commercial Real Estate, Corporate Banking, Working Capital and other BB&T product offerings.
9. Drive the new and renewal credit process by participating in the CSU meetings, working opportunities through the pipeline, facilitating communication, completing the underwriting, driving closing process through appropriate transition to the appropriate associates within the CSU and Commercial Fulfilment.
10. Manage data integrity of credit variables to include the accuracy of risk rating calculations and input in the system. Participate in CCAR activities as needed.
11. Support Relationship Managers, Market Presidents and Regional Presidents in administration of business portfolio of Region in order to achieve desired results of quality, profitability and growth. Recommend pricing when underwriting credits. Specifically look for opportunities to drive a relationship approach when underwriting new business and looking for IRM opportunities.
12. Support consistent, effective communication with Client Service Unit (includes Relationship Managers and Commercial Sales Assistants) to provide superior risk management, client service and revenue generation.

Required Skills and Competencies:

1. Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business, or equivalent education and related training
2. Ten years of experience in banking industry or related work experience, consistency mostly of underwriting or co-approval experience
3. Demonstrated ability to provide group leadership to a team of five or less underwriters
4. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities under time constraints
5. Strong credit leadership skills
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
7. Understanding of financial and cost accounting principles
8. Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office software products
9. Successful completion of a formalized credit program
10. Ability to travel, occasionally overnight


Desired Skills:
1. Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Business
2. High degree of quantitative analysis skills
3. Demonstrated proficiency in commercial lending systems
4. Strong knowledge of Bank’s deposit and payments products

Accountable for recommending credit structures with respect to quality, profitability within assigned geographies. Fundamental duties include ensuring that the risk philosophy, risk appetite, and lending strategies of the Community Bank are adhered to while maintaining a high level of client responsiveness. Easily navigate a wide variety of financial structures, credit scenarios and financial statement analysis situations. Communicate risk/return effectively with the Client Support Units (CSU) partners, and Commercial Credit Administration partners. Team Leaders will also carry the responsibility as player/coaches to manage a small group of Commercial Credit Underwriters. Primary accountabilities will be hiring, supervising, and leading associates for optimal performance. Note: Commercial Credit Underwriter levels I-V will be differentiated by size and complexity of portfolio, experience and other criteria determined relevant by Community Banking.
